Margin is the amount of money you must deposit to open a leveraged trade. It acts as a “security deposit” that ensures you can cover potential losses. Margin does not represent the full value of your position — only a small portion of it.
When you trade with leverage, your broker requires a percentage of the total position size as margin. The higher the leverage, the lower the margin required — and the lower the leverage, the higher the margin.
Margin ensures you have enough funds to support your position if the market moves against you.
You want to open a $10,000 position with 1:100 leverage.
This means you only need $100 to control a $10,000 position. The remaining $9,900 is effectively “borrowed” through leverage.
Free margin is the money in your account that is not currently used as margin. You can use it to open new trades or absorb losses.
Margin level shows how healthy your account is. It is calculated as:
